Hi guys would anyone be able to help me out. I got a engine for my bike and the guy I got it off didn’t know what year it was from. I got it very cheap so I took a chance on it. The engine number is EX500AE155614
I thought it was an early model so I went and got a early ecu but the engine won’t start. It has fuel and spark and the compression is good. I think it’s the wrong ecu and the timing is out due to this. Any help would be very much appreciated.

89 onwards so could be either but with a number that high I'd guess it was gen 2.

Pull the flywheel cover off the left hand side of the engine. To identify which flywheel is fitted. You can identify between early & late types. See other posts on here for the differences. A gen1 may have been modded to gen2 design but it’s highly unlikely a gen2 engine would have a gen1 flywheel fitted.

An easy way to tell if you have an early engine...88 to 94/95...is to look at the cooling fins. 4 fin engines are 1st gen (but some 4 fins were carried over into 1st year second gens as kawa used up old stock), and 5 fin engines are 2nd gen...94 onwards (mainly).
